Thelma Grossman, 86
YORK BEACH — Peacefully, Thelma Grossman, 86, of York Beach, passed way on Sept. 12, 2014, at the Monarch Center in Saco with tremendous courage and dignity, in a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s.
She was born in Montreal, Quebec on Aug. 12, 1928, and was the daughter of David Craft and Etty Cohen.
She was the beloved wife of her late husband William Grossman. A young widow at the age of 34, she was challenged to raise three sons, ages 12, 10 and 6. She became the sole provider of her family which led to her first career as a real estate agent in Montreal. She was the top sales agent for many years in the early 1970s.
In 1977, she made a decision to move to Maine after visiting the area for family vacations. She loved Maine so much, she was sure that other visitors would fall in love with it as she did. She bought an ocean front property at York Beach and designed a 32 unit ‘Vacation Paradise’ resort named the ‘Long Beach Motor Inn.’ This was her dream project and her home on the property was her haven of comfort and peace.
She enjoyed many hobbies including interior decorating, knitting, gardening, reading, gazing out the window to enjoy the shimmering tides and caring for cats and dogs.
She is survived by three sons, Allen and wife Patricia of Kennebunk, Ronald and wife Hilary of Ottawa, Ontario, and Gary of York Beach; three grandsons, Daniel and wife Ann Marie of Toronto, Ontario, Noah and wife Holly of Ottawa, and Joshua of Ottawa; a great-granddaughter Ivy and another great-grandchild on the way; sister Edith Packer of Toronto, Ontario; niece Donna Guttmann of Israel; and Richard Todd Packer of Hamilton, Ontario. She was predeceased by her sister Marilyn, and brother Fred, both from Montreal.
Special thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Monarch Center, York Hospital and Cristian Hepburn of Greater Faith Works for their care, kindness and devotion.
A funeral service will take place at the Levey Chapel, 471 Deering Ave., Portland, on Wednesday, Sept. 17, at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at a later date in Montreal, Canada. Arrangements by The Jewish Funeral Home, Portland.
