Sally Lorraine Laskoff, 88
PORTLAND – Sally Lorraine Laskoff, of Portland passed away on June 27, 2018 at The Cedars Long Term Care facility at the age of 88.
Sally was born in Peabody, Mass., on April 18, 1930 as the youngest of five children. After graduating from Everett High School at the age of 17 she began taking classes at Salem State College to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a teacher. In 1948, at the age of 18, she married Rubin Laskoff and they were married for 68 years before he passed in 2016.
Together, in 1949, Sally and Rubin moved from Massachusetts to Portland, Maine and opened Central Yarn Shop. They retired in 1991 when daughter, Rhona Vosmus, took over the shop.
Sally dreamed of becoming a teacher since she was three-years-old and while she never taught in a classroom she had taught so many people how to knit in the yarn shop for over 65 years. As a lifelong learner, she took multiple classes in art history at the University of Southern Maine and was well know for regularly breaking out and singing songs, specifically show tunes. Sally had a warm welcoming smile and would especially light up when she saw her family.
Sally is survived by her sister, Trudy Bolger; her two daughters, Rhona Vosmus and husband, Roger Vosmus, of Gorham and Susan Laskoff and husband, Scott Marantz, of Torrance, Calif., and predeceased son, Steven Laskoff, of Portland; her grandchildren, including Stephanie Vosmus and husband, Johnathan Michaud, of Lebanon; William Vosmus and wife, Kalley Vosmus, of Raymond; Ella and Hayden Marantz of Torrance, Calif.; great-granddaughter, Ella Magnuson of Raymond; and many nieces, nephews and great-grandchildren.
Sally’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the staff at The Cedars for your open hearts and great care of Sally.
Services will be held at The Jewish Funeral Home, 470 Deering Ave., Portland, at noon, on Friday June 29. Family and friends are invited to luncheon after the service at The Cedars, 630 Ocean Ave., Portland, at 2 p.m. Shiva will be private.
