ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Robert H. Litman, 90, of St Petersburg, Fla., passed away Feb. 7, 2019, with his daughter at his side after a brief illness.
He was born Oct. 14, 1928, in Lowell, Mass. to Ester and Julius Litman. They moved to Portland when he was a very young child and he lived all but the last 12 years in Portland. He attended Deering High School, enlisted in the Navy during WWII and then in the National Reserves for six years after.
He attended and played football for MCI and University of Maine at Orono. He played both Fast pitch and Slow pitch softball as an adult for the JCC in Portland Leagues.
He met his wife, Evelyn Clara Green Litman, at Old Orchard Beach and told her the very first date he was going to marry her and they wed on June 15, 1952.
He worked selling shoes for his father at Rines Brothers and then for his father-in-law at Greens Shoe Stores. He also worked as a salesman at a few different companies including selling, carpeting, women’s clothing, and then real estate on Frye’s Island and Lake Arrowhead. He later opened a pizza and sandwich shop in Portland with his son Michael called The Place. He worked hard but always found time for family, friends, and donating his time to the JCC and Temple Beth El. He made many friends along the way with his smile, sense of humor, and kind heart. He was active in many organizations including the Elks Club, Masons, Temple Beth El, JCC of which he was a past president, and the American Legion.
He and his wife moved to Florida in 2007 near their daughter. When his wife became too ill to be at home in 2009, his daughter Marcy took over as his caretaker. He moved in with his daughter and soon became a grandfather and foster grandfather to many, many rescue dogs, a role he cherished right up until his passing.
He is predeceased by his parents, brother Phillip Litman, his wife Evelyn and his brothers-in-law Norbert Green (wife Miriam) and Fred Green (wife Jeanette). He is survived by his four children Michael (wife Sally) Litman of Portland, Peter (wife Heidi) Litman of Portland, Dana (wife Paula) Litman of Suwanne, Ga., and daughter Marcy Litman of St Petersburg Fla.; five grandchildren Drew Litman, Keith (wife Jennnie) Litman, Julie Litman, Alex (wife Rachel) Litman, Rachel Litman; and five great-grandchildren, Caroline, Felicity, Abram, Robinson, and Jules.
Services are Sunday, Feb. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Levey Chapel, 471 Deering Ave, Portland, Maine. Interment will follow at Temple Beth El Memorial Park In Portland. A period of mourning will be held at 99 Longwood Dr., Portland Sunday and Monday evening.
