Anne Zamcheck Spiegel, 94
PORTLAND – Anne Zamcheck Spiegel died at her home on Saturday, May 2, 2015. Anne, the youngest child of Samuel and Sarah Zamcheck, was born in Lynn, Mass., on Nov. 20, 1920. Her two older brothers Irving and Norman gave her the family nickname “Babe,” which affectionately followed her throughout her life, although her husband preferred the nickname “Boss.” She graduated from Lynn Classical High School and then completed her studies by training as a laboratory technician and medical secretary. It was while she was working in Boston that she was introduced to Jack Spiegel.
Anne and Jack married in 1946 and honeymooned in Falmouth, resulting in their lifelong love affair with Maine. They returned to Maine shortly after, settling in the Portland area. Anne and Jack started their own business, building Quoddy Moccasins, which they ran for over 25 years. In addition to tending to their business, they raised a family with two sons, Larry and Marshall, and became very active in the Portland community. Anne proudly served as den mother and was involved in all of her sons’ activities.
For many years, Anne sat on the Temple Beth El Sisterhood Board of Directors, including serving as the chairwoman of fundraising, and also sang in the temple’s choir for 14 years. She was also a member of the Lions of Judah, part of The Jewish Community Alliance. Throughout their lives Anne and Jack were dedicated philanthropists, generously supporting many diverse charitable organizations and causes.
Anne was predeceased by her loving husband Jack of 64 years; and her sons, Larry and Marshall. She is survived by her grandson David; daughter-in-law Nancy; and many devoted nieces and nephews.
A funeral service for Anne will be held at Temple Beth El, 400 Deering Avenue, Portland, on Tuesday, May 5, at 11 a.m., with interment at Beth El Memorial Park, followed by a luncheon at The Atrium, 640 Ocean Ave., Portland. The family will be receiving visitors Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6-8 p.m., at the home of Nancy Spiegel. Arrangements have been made by The Jewish Funeral Home, Portland.

In lieu of flowers, the family
