Bernard Edward Cowan passed away at the age of 73 on June 9, 2024, at Gosnell House in Scarborough after a long illness. Bernard was born on November 28, 1950, in Bangor, Maine, the son of Bella (Rolnick) and Harold Cowan.
Bernard attended Bangor schools and upon moving to Saco, he graduated from Thornton Academy. He attended the University of Maine, Gorham. After graduation, Bernard moved to New York City where he became involved in the publishing industry for 19 years.
Bernard moved back to Saco to join his mother in the family business, Sam’s Place, where he enjoyed a successful and fulfilling career interacting with customers.
Bernard’s love of music, quick-witted personality, and conversation will be missed by all who knew him.
Bernard leaves behind his brother David R. Cowan of South Carolina, several nieces, cousins, and many life-long friends.
Bernard’s family would like to thank Maureen Flynn who provided him with unwavering and unconditional support as he navigated his illness.
The family would also like to extend their great appreciation for the staff of the Gosnell House for the loving care Bernard received at the end of his life at the Gosnell House.
A Memorial Service led by Cantor Beth Strassler will take place at the Jewish Funeral Home, 471 Deering Ave., Portland at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, June 11. Interment will follow immediately at Mt. Carmel Cemetery, 159 Hicks St., Portland.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Bernard’s honor to the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House, are greatly appreciated by his family.
