Harold Morris Romanow, 97
PORTLAND – Harold Morris Romanow, of Portland, peacefully passed away on July 14, 2018, surrounded by family and the caring staff of Falmouth by the Sea. Harold was truly blessed to have lived such a long and full life, and to have passed surrounded by those who loved and so tenderly cared for him.
Harold was born in Portland on August 1, 1920, and grew up in Portland’s Munjoy Hill neighborhood, where he attended Portland Public Schools. He was the first member of the Romanow family to be a native born American, but was always proud of his immigrant heritage. He was the son of Sarah and Samuel Romanow.
Harold served his country during World War II as a member of the Army/Airforce where he was an instructor of new technology: Radar. He was recalled into the service during the Korean Conflict. Between these two conflicts, he met and married the love of his life for 70 years, Florence Levine, whom he married on December 19, 1948.
After the end of the Korean conflict, Harold returned to Portland, and with his father and brother Ben, established Romanow Furniture. The company expanded to five locations across the state, becoming Maine’s largest furniture chain. The entertaining, and some may say, aggressive nature of their advertising is legendary.
Harold’s greatest mission in life was to care for Florence during her long struggle with Alzheimer’s, lasting well over 15 years. His example of loyalty and unwavering commitment set an example for both family and those who knew him. One of his greatest joys was making sure his family, and then his grandchildren enjoyed each summer on the beach in Old Orchard from the day after school let out until Labor Day.
Harold is survived by his son Richard and wife Anita, his daughter Judith and partner Deb Deneen; four grandchildren, David and wife Mary Ellen, Michael and wife Roxann, Bryan and wife Erin, and Daniel and wife Sarah; five great-grandchildren, Olivia, Victoria, Brooklyn, Sebastian and Brynn. Harold was predeceased by his wife, Florence; his son Stephen; and his brother Benjamin.
Harold’s family wishes to thank the professional and compassionate staff of Falmouth by the Sea, for their tender care of both Harold and Florence over the last year. Much gratitude to Dr. Gary Green and the eternally kind and patient Pam for their medical care and support over several decades. Appreciation to Rabbi Gary Berenson for his spiritual support and kindness.
A service will to held at Levy Chapel, 471 Deering Ave., Portland, on Wednesday, July 18, at 12:30 p.m.
Burial to follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Arrangements are being compassionately handled by the Jewish Funeral Home.
