Helene Lewis Obler passed away on Wednesday, February 15 th at her home, surrounded by family. She was born in Ithaca, NY in April of 1930 to Edward and Ida Lewis. For many years her father worked in the grocery business. She grew up with an older sister and attended Ithaca schools. She lived there until her marriage in 1950 to Leonard Obler of Elmira, NY. They lived in Elmira and started their family there.
A few years later the family moved to Syracuse for her husband’s teaching career. Helene also became a teacher, working for many years in the Syracuse School System. After retirement, Helene and her family moved to Portland to be near their son and his family. Helene found enjoyment in retirement, helping to raise her granddaughter, Tatiana. They shared many experiences together and developed a close bond over the years. For almost 20 years Helene lived in the North Deering area of Portland. She became a regular member of a local mah jongg group, enjoyed local theater, and social activities. She was also a longtime member of Bet Ha’am Synagogue in South Portland. Helene often said how happy she was to have moved to Portland, appreciating it and all the wonders of her adopted state. The cold weather rarely bothered her, having spent many years in upstate NY.
Over the years Helene made many lifelong, treasured friends. She was known for her sense of humor, which helped keep her young in spirit. She enjoyed being active socially and was always willing to join in the fun. An accomplished cook, she loved to entertain, and did so into her 90’s. Before her health put a stop to her traveling, she took her family on several cruises, which she thoroughly enjoyed. In the fall of 2021 she and her guests celebrated her 90th birthday at the local restaurant DiMillo’s, one of her favorites. The celebration had been postponed from the previous year due to the pandemic. Helen’s son Alan performed with his band for the group’s entertainment. Her granddaughter gifted her with a beautifully illustrated poster in celebration of the event and Helene proudly hung it on her wall at home.
Helene is survived by her son Alan, his wife Sakura and their daughter Tati, and her favorite grand-dog Em, a loyal companion in her later years. She was preceded in death by her loving husband Len; her mother and father; her sister; her in-laws Henry Pinnette, Sr. and Miyo; and her dear friend Marlene Evans. Most of her extended family, including a dear brother-in-law and his family, reside in California. She will be greatly missed by family and all who knew her.
