Mary Lynn Carp, 74
GORHAM — Mary Lynn Carp died peacefully Sunday, April 28. She was born Sept. 14, 1938, in New York, N.Y. Mary earned a scholarship to Woodmere Academy, where she was the captain of her field hockey team and graduated with honors. She attended Simmons College where she earned a Bachelor of Science and a certificate of Physical Therapy.
Mary married Gerald Carp in 1961, and together they raised three children. She leaves her husband; children Michael and wife Mary of Los Altos, Calif., Alan, of Portland, and Rachel of Gorham; grandchildren Andrew, Sam and Millie Carp and Jenny and Trevor Loubier. She is also survived by her brother Jeffrey Auerbach and her sister-in-law/best friend of 53 years, Nancy Finberg; as well as nieces, nephews and extended family with whom she was very close.
Mary practiced as a physical therapist for more than 30 years at the Maine Medical Center where she earned the respect and love of the medical staff and the countless patients whom she helped. Never one to sit idly by, following her retirement from MMC, Mary worked as a per diem physical therapist at Mercy Hospital.
Mary was an involved member of the community in Portland. She was a member of Temple Beth El Sisterhood, National Council of Jewish Women, and The Association of Physical Therapists of America. Mary volunteered at the Maine Medical Center information desk, as well as with Portland Adult Education as an ESL teacher’s aide where she was able to assist five immigrants attain their U.S. citizenship. Mary was proud of the two weeks she spent in Peru with Catholic Charities assisting families and teaching medical personnel.
Mary’s interests included: family, travel, reading, and sports,especially golf.
Mary was a great wife, mother, and friend.
The funeral service for Mary will be at Temple Beth El, 400 Deering Ave., Portland, on Wednesday, May 1 at 1:30 p.m, with interment to follow at Temple Beth El Memorial Park. Following interment, friends and family may extend condolences at the home of Jerry Carp, 26 Ridgefield Road, Gorham. Shiva services on Wednesday, May 1 will take place at the home at 6:30 p.m. Family will also receive visitors on Thursday, May 2, from 4:00 p.m., with services at 6:30. Arrangements by The Jewish Funeral Home, Portland.
