Rose Wise Novick

September 27, 1928 - October 14, 2018

PORTLAND – Rose Wise Novick passed away unexpectedly at her home on Saturday afternoon. Rose was the 4th of 5 children born to Samuel and Sarah Wise in Lewiston, Maine on September 27, 1928. She had just celebrated her 90th birthday at a large family gathering that allowed her to reconnect with many friends and family. She attended Lewiston schools and graduated from Lewiston High School. After graduation she worked for Sears before meeting the love of her life, Jack Novick. Following a brief courtship they married in Old Orchard Beach. They were married for 62 years before Jack’s passing in 2010. For more than 60 years Rose was a fixture at Hub Furniture Co, her late husband’s family business. She had a strong work ethic and a commitment to see the business succeed. She continued to work at the Westbrook store until 3 days before she died. The business and her ever growing family were the focal points of her life. Rose was a member of Temple Beth El and the Jewish Community Alliance. She enjoyed summers at family homes in Old Orchard Beach and Little Sebago Lake, North Windham. Rose was predeceased by her sisters Frances Bigman and Nettie Shapiro and brother Julius Wise. Rose is survived by her sister, Gwen Deiber and husband Jack of Schenectady NY, and several nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her three children, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Her eldest son, Samuel and his wife Bette of Portland ME, their children, David and wife Dena with sons Henry, Jack and Benjamin of Woodbridge CT, Andrew and wife Sabrina with sons Alexander and Martin of Falmouth ME, Matthew and wife Rebecca with daughters Callie and Mila of Brooklyn NY. Her younger son, Norman and his wife Connie of Fairfax VA, and their children, Anne of Bear DE, Michael of Manassas VA, and William of Chicago IL. And her youngest child Sarah Weinstein and her husband Alan of Old Orchard Beach ME and daughter Anna Crowther and husband Tom of Middle Grove NY. Rose was proud of their every moment, going to school and sporting events whenever possible. Never a day would go by when Rose would not engage people in conversation about her family. She was so very proud of them all.

A funeral service will be held at 1pm, Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Temple Beth El, 400 Deering Ave, Portland. Rabbi Carolyn Braun will officiate. Interment will follow at Mount Sinai Cemetery, Hicks St, Portland. Shiva (visiting hours) will be held at the home of Sam and Bette Novick on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6 to 8 pm. In lieu of flowers the family has requested donations be made to the Jack Novick Center Day Camp Scholarship Fund at the Jewish Community Alliance or a charity of your choice.
