LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Sam was born and raised in Portland on Munjoy Hill.

After leaving to serve as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy during WWII, he received a business degree from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity.
